On the heels of one of the biggest nights in Hollywood comes much anticipated news from the James Beard Foundation. The 2013 first-round nominations for the Beard Awards, the highest honor bestowed upon the culinary industry, have just been announced and Los Angeles has plenty reasons to toast.

Competing in the National category we have L.A. standouts Suzanne Goin (Lucques’, West Hollywood) and Nancy Silverton (Pizzeria Mozza, Los Angeles) for most outstanding chef; Melisse (Santa Monica) and Patina (Los Angeles) for outstanding restaurant; Valentino’s (Santa Monica) Piero Selvggio and Lucques’ Caroline Styne for outstanding restaurateurs; Tar & Roses (Santa Monica) and BierBeisl (Beverly Hills) for best new restaurant; Rivera (Los Angeles) and the Varnish (Los Angeles) for outstanding bar program; Sycamore Kitchen’s (Los Angeles) Karen Hatfield for best pastry chef; Providence (Los Angeles) for best dining service; and BierBeisl’s Bernhard Mairinger along with Night + Market’s (Hollywood) Kris Yenbamroong for rising star chef of the year, a category for chefs 30 and under.

The following shortlisted chefs competing for Best Chef among the West are: Josef Centeno (Baco Mercat), Michael Cimarusti (Providence), Andrew Kirschner (Tar & Roses), David LeFevre (MB Post), John Sedlar (Rivera and Playa), Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo (Animal), and Richard Zarate (Mo-Chica).
