Dubai, a place that challenges preconceived notions of what the Middle East looks like includes a waterfront city that is finally coming into its own. The Dubai Marina, hewn from the desert and connected to the Persian Gulf is a feat of engineering genius even sans skyline. The skyline is simply one more marvelous feature of a neighborhood that is now one of the best multicultural urban playgrounds in the city.

The Dubai Marina is a treat for culinary wanderers. An eatery-lined walkway includes high-end yachts on one side for the gawker’s delight. Options in nourishment include Indian, Japanese and Mexican among many others. If outdoor pursuits fit your lifestyle more completely, exercise on the outdoor running track, use the public fitness equipment or lounge on the sandy beach located on the Gulf shore itself. Playgrounds are hidden delicately underneath bridges that span the Marina and sidewalk fountains allow for overheated children or adults afternoon refreshment. An old-fashioned merry-go-round is located nearby gifting endless entertainment.

The waterfront city within a city is well-served by public transportation via ferry and monorail connections that are convenient and accessible. For those with a little more cash on hand, party barges, water taxis or private yachts are also available.
