Most widely known for his multi-billion dollar brand, Tommy Hilfiger is set to publish a dual-focused book about the story of his life, and his business. Set to be published by Random House in October, American Dreamer is described as “the definitive memoir of a timeless fashion icon.”
“It’s been months and months of writing,” said Hilfiger. “It’s like therapy.”
The book is a collection of memories that include Hilfiger growing up in Elmire, N.Y., along with the Manhattan club scene in the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties, and then on through the arc of creating his now $6.7 billion PVH-owned company. American Dreamer chronicles the designer’s setbacks, triumphs and sheer determination that drove him to build a global lifestyle brand.
As entrepreneurs around the country are striving to offer American-made products and create American-made businesses in cities such as Detroit and Providence, R.I., Hilfiger offers the unique perspective of someone who has more than succeeded. “Competing in the global marketplace, [means you have to figure out] how do you do that with a brand born in America. I wouldn’t say it’s science, but there is a lot of strategizing that goes on.”
The American-made designer founded his apparel company in 1985. Today, his eponymous line is sold in department stores and in over 1,400 free-standing retail stores in 90 countries. Tommy Hilfiger Group is owned by PVH Corp and Tommy Hilfiger remains the company’s principal designer, leading the design teams and overseeing the entire creative process. Global sales in retail through the brand in 2013 were $6.4 billion in 2013 and $6.7 billion in 2014.
American Dreamer, by Tommy Hilfiger is set to be released October 18, 2016. Click here for more information.
