La Paz—the dynamic capital of Baja California Sur—has been named one of the 52 Places to Visit in 2020 by The New York Times. The Agency has long been a fan of La Paz’s pristine beaches, relaxed atmosphere and incredible real estate—last summer, our team debuted a new office in the area and currently represents some of the region’s hottest properties, including Penthouse 406 at Playa La Paz. The New York Times’s selection process for the 52 destinations takes four months of research and discussion among the publication’s travel editors, regular contributors as well as The Times’s foreign and domestic correspondents. The final picks were deemed to have a timely, intriguing caché while also being beautiful and culturally significant.
Part of La Paz’s appeal—both to real estate investors and vacationers—has been its under-the-radar status. “Unlike many of Mexico’s better-known beach towns, the La Paz area has resisted large-scale resort-style development and remained comparatively unknown to outsiders,” notes the article. “Decades ago, local environmentalists pushed for the creation of what eventually became the expansive UNESCO Marine World Heritage protected area, a designation that aimed to preserve the coast and offshore areas, home to such rich biodiversity that the Sea of Cortez is known as the ‘Aquarium of the World.’”
La Paz has also completed a broad-reaching refurbishment, adding to its recent surge in popularity. “The city has undergone a massive, multiyear renovation of its waterfront malecón, or boardwalk, which extended its length by three miles, created bike lanes and added a skate park, fountains, and sculptures by prominent Mexican artists illustrating local marine life,” The New York Times reports.
