Fashion’s uncompromising saga of taking risks and inventing cultural trends is explored at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new exhibit, Manus x Machina. Through August 14, the museum’s Robert Lehman Wing features the technological advancements that’s weaved new concepts through style and design, with over 150 ensembles on display and some pieces dating back to the early 20th century.
Museum goers are offered a glimpse in to a fashion designer’s world; at the center of the exhibit will be an installation that showcases toiles and prototypes presented as garments that are in the process of being created. Since the invention of the sewing machine, there has been a distinct difference between
man-made and machine-made articles. The dichotomy between the two is questioned at the showcase, where several different rooms offer more in-depth research of traditional atelier and tailoring practices and its counter, modern approach to design.
The relationship and distinction between haute couture and ready-to-wear, especially in the age of technology, is a line that continues to become more and more blurred as continual advancements are being discovered. Kicking off the exhibit was the annual Met Gala, a celebrity-sighting extravaganza that brings the industry’s elite in fashion-forward ensembles. This year’s theme of fashion in the age of technology brought many futuristic looks to the red carpet. Among the show-stopping guests included Taylor Swift, Anna Wintour, Jared Leto, Brie Larson, Claire Danes, Bradley Cooper and Nicole Kidman.
