For Montgomery Knott, founder and curator of Monkey Town, a video art meets supper club pop-up in Downtown Los Angeles, thinking outside the box involves stepping inside the cube — a massive 27-foot floating video cube, to be exact. Currently housed inside a 10,000-square-foot former upholstery warehouse, the touring culinary and video art experience puts a new spin on the typical dinner-and-a-movie date. Each night, 40 guests are treated to a four or five-course meal and wine pairings by Momofuku alum Nick Montgomery. Films by contemporary artists like Shana Moulton, Agnes Bolt, and Takeshi Murat play in succession on either side of a giant video cube. If that doesn’t sound immersive enough, each seating also includes a live performance from a rotating cast of experimental artists and musicians. The seasonal, locally sourced menu, which features items like Cured Arctic Char and Gnocchetti Tirolesi & Berkshire Port Ragout, would stand out in any dining room, but the visual and auditory accompaniment ensures every course is as savory as it is psychedelic. Two seatings per night are available: 6:30pm and 9pm. A Four-course meal is offered on Tuesdays at $50. Five-course meals are $70 each, Wednesday to Sunday.
