With the holiday season comes many reminders to be grateful, and to give back. Here, we highlight six ways to support causes and communities in and around South Florida.
US Department of Veteran Affairs - Donate funds to help support a range of veteran services, or apply to provide in-person assistance—the organization often needs help with its Beneficiary Travel program, which was established to provide transport for veterans seeking services from a VA facility or an authorized facility.
Feeding South Florida - Feeding South Florida delivers meals to those in need in Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Monroe counties. For this organization, every dollar truly makes a difference—for every $1 donated, Feeding South Florida can provide six meals. To date, the organization has distributed more than 51,500,000 meals.
Joe DiMaggio Children's Foundation - Since 1992, thousands of children and their families have looked to this Hollywood, Florida facility for compassionate medical care. Volunteers for the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital can greet visitors as they arrive, escort families around the hospital, provide office administrative support, help patients with their academic work, assist Child Life Specialists in playrooms and teen rooms, and much more.
Operation Gratitude - Each year, Operation Gratitude sends more than 300,000 letters and care packages to deployed troops, first responders, new recruits and wounded veterans around the globe. As the holidays approach, these notes of support are even more important to the morale of these courageous men and women. Contact Operation Gratitude to learn how to submit a letter.
Neighbors 4 Neighbors - Neighbors 4 Neighbors has been connecting South Florida families in need to vital support systems for nearly three decades—call or visit their website to learn how your family (or your company) can participate in the annual Adopt a Family 4 the Holidays program. The program can provide a range of useful resources for families—from groceries to gift cards. In 2018, Neighbors 4 Neighbors developed and delivered nearly $900,000 in resources and donated goods to local families in need.
Florida Humane Society - Make time to volunteer at South Florida’s animal shelter in Pompano Beach. This no-kill shelter has been a safe haven for dogs and cats since 1993, and is always open to volunteer support and donations. Apply to be a foster home, help the staff groom and socialize cats and dogs, coordinate and carry out veterinarian trips, assist in cleaning cages and provide help with a range of administrative tasks.
