Known as the Steel & Glass house, this Donald Wexler designed property is the last home the celebrated architect directly had a hand in building. Wexler drew the plans which were finalized less than 2 months before his passing in 2015. The home was showcased the following year for Modernism Week 2016.
He believed that steel was ideal for desert building as it was economical & could withstand the climate of extreme sun, heat and wind.
He once famously said, "We didn't even think of it as 'Modern' in terms of architecture for the desert. We did it to live with the environment, a matter of balancing orientation and views".
In the early 60's, Donald Wexler and his partner at the time were contracted to design an all-steel home project for a neighborhood in Palm Springs. When steel prices skyrocketed, the plans came to a halt. Only seven homes would be completed, yet they remain an intricate part of Palm Springs history.
In addition to his steel home designs, many of his projects are still acclaimed in the architectural world today, including our very own Palm Springs International Airport, Dinah Shore's home (most recently purchased by Leonardo DiCaprio), and the Royal Hawaiian Estates development.
