Phoenix, AZ

Phoenix, Arizona is a large city in Maricopa County with the nickname “Valley of the Sun.” The population is around 1,514,000 residents. The city boasts three hundred days of sunshine every year. For about a third of the year the temperature is at least 100 degrees. The city gets over 16 million visitors every year. The quickest way to get to Phoenix is the Sky Harbor International Airport; although many other popular destinations such as Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, San Diego, Sedona, and Flagstaff are all less than a six-hour drive. The city is divided into fifteen urban villages.

The architecture of Phoenix is influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, who moved to the area in 1937, and Ralph Haver, who created the affordable “Haver Home” tract houses.

Intel is one of the largest employers in the city, with a campus of 120,000 employees. It is the second largest Intel location in the country. Apollo Group, the parent company of the University of Phoenix, is also located in the city.

Phoenix ranks number 3 in the county for the healthiest residents. Most residents lead a very active lifestyle. With all the sunshine there are plenty of activities to get people outside and moving. Many people enjoy hiking, bicycling, golf and other sports. There is the 4.6 mile Bicycle Boulevard path and the Grid Bike Share program for those who don't own their own bicycle. The Phoenix golf scene is a big draw for many people. There are over 100 golf courses in the area.  The Wildfire Golf Club has layouts designed by Arnold Palmer and Nick Faldo. The PGA Tour oftens stops in Phoenix to utilize its array of courses.

Phoenix has a team in all four major sports leagues in the United States: for baseball, the Arizona Diamondbacks; basketball, the Phoenix Suns; football, The Arizona Cardinals; and hockey, the Arizona Coyotes.

There is plenty of nature to explore around Phoenix as well. At the Heard Museum there is a 140-acre desert botanical garden to wander around. There are also 189 public parks and 33,000 acres of desert preserves and 200 miles of trails. The Salt River is also nearby. When you’re out in the nature be sure to be on the lookout for the diverse wildlife Phoenix has to offer. The coyotes are prevalent but there are also desert tortoises, roadrunners, wild pigs, jaguars, bald eagles, mountain lions, and snakes. 

There are also many cultural and entertainment options in Phoenix. The Heard Museum features exhibits about Native Arts and Culture.  There is the Arizona Opera Company and Ballet Arizona offer live music and dance performances. The Arizona Science Center and The WONDER Center offer educational outtings. There is a large number of local festivals, usually held in early spring or late fall to avoid the summer heat. There is also the Wet N’ Wild Phoenix waterpark.

Phoenix is home to many restaurants. You can grab some authentic Mexican food at TeePee. They’ve been serving Phoenix since 1958. If pizza is more your style then you will enjoy Pizzeria Biancos, which has been in Phoenix for 25 years. If it’s a real, authentic, Wild West experience you’re going for than you can’t miss Rustler’s Rooste. Here you’ll be greeted by Horney the longhorn steer out front, take a Tin Slide into the dining room, and listen to a live country and western band while you eat.

A major part of the culture of Phoenix is Arizona State University and its students. The school was ranked the number 2 “Up and Coming” school by U.S.News in 2005.  Although the school has many programs and offerings, the one that is the most unique -- the first of its kind in the nation -- is the School of Sustainability they established in 2006. The school is teaching students that “sustainability is improving human well-being and ensuring social equity for present and future generations while safeguarding the planet’s life-supporting ecosystems,” says the dean of the School of Sustainability, Chris Boone.
