Established in 1917, this open warehouse of local vendors, street foods, local delicacies and arts of Downtown Los Angeles is getting bigger and even better.
Over a hundred years ago, Broadway was the center of the commercial and entertainment corridor in the DTLA neighborhood. What is now Bunker Hill Towers was then a quaint neighborhood of mostly Victorian mansions. Residents came down the Angels Flight to shop for groceries in the market below.
Though the market has evolved and changed along with the population of Downtown Los Angeles, and housed over ninety-plus vendors including multiple green grocers, fishmongers, Jewish delish, butchers, baked goods, flowers, coffee and eggs, it has remained popular among downtown Angelenos.
In 1984, downtown visionary Ira Yellin, a successful developer whose interested was in historical preservation, bought Grand Central Market and neighboring properties like the Million Dollar Theater and the landmark Bradbury Building across the street.
Grand Central Market is now much more than just a grocery to the local people – it has emerged into an entire community of food, culture and DIY Angeleno pride. Open every day to the public between 8am and 6pm, the market now houses almost 40 local vendors including the famous egg joint, Egg Slut, DTLA Cheese, Press Brothers Juicery and G&B Coffee. And not to fret, one-hour parking is complimentary with a $10 purchase. Validation is in the parking garage on Hill St.
