A Stunning Rustic Canyon Compound Designed by Frank Gehry Makes Its Debut

by | Oct 18, 2018

A spectacular, one-acre compound in Santa Monica’s coveted Rustic Canyon recently made its market debut, and its got quite the architectural pedigree.

Represented by Cindy Ambuehl and Blair Chang, the iconic property was originally designed by Frank Gehry in 1978 and later reimagined by Mark Mack. The perfect marriage of architectural prowess and warm, sophisticated design, the 5,164-square-foot modern main house and 2,000-square-foot midcentury modern guest house gracefully coalesce with nature to form a one-of-a-kind, coastal-canyon retreat.

Set beyond a long, gated driveway and tranquil courtyard, the main house is replete with soaring, exposed beam ceilings, polished concrete floors, a two-story gallery and vaulted skylights that bathe the interiors in natural light. Multi-leveled living spaces are perfectly conceived for entertaining, with several rooms opening to the home’s lush outdoor entertaining areas, including two separate seating areas with fireplaces, an outdoor cinema with built-in projector, grassy lawn, heated pool and spa, and meditation platform nestled atop the hillside. The impressive master suite showcases gorgeous hardwood floors, varying ceiling heights and a private creekside deck. A second, treehouse-like spa bath is crowned by a marble soaking tub and lined with windows that immerse the space in the sights and sounds of the canyon.

A world all its own, the two-bedroom, three-bath guest house is encircled by a wraparound deck overlooking a country-club quality putting green and firepit lounge. The guest house includes a spacious living room with a fireplace and tongue-and-groove ceilings, full kitchen, fully equipped gym and auto gallery.

Cindy and Blair recently debuted the pedigreed property with a VIP twilight launch. Guests enjoyed sushi by Chef Colin Whitbread of Soosh LA, cocktails by Choux Choux LA and sips courtesy of 4 Copas Tequila, VDKA 6100 and Chalk Hill. The home’s transportive grounds, illuminated by Lighten Up Inc., proved the perfect setting for the early fall fete.

“There is no other property in L.A. that compares to 600 E. Rustic,” says Cindy. “Its secluded canyon setting makes you feel worlds away from it all, yet once you step outside the gates, you’re just moments from the beach, Pacific Coast Highway, Brentwood Country Mart and the new Palisades Village. Blair and I are proud to represent this architecturally significant property and had a great time celebrating with family and friends at our twilight launch.”
