Our picks of places to go and things to do to make the most of your month in and around Puerto Vallarta, Punta Mita and Los Cabos.
CELEBRATE DIA DE LOS MUERTOS HERE - While the actual holiday takes place November 2, the festivities in Puerto Vallarta start Friday October 18. Enjoy special dishes from local restaurants and live music throughout the city’s Old Town neighborhood. Colorful, fun and lively, this is a beautiful celebration of life for the whole family.
FISH FOR A WINNER HERE - La Cruz de Huanacaxtle Fishing Tournament, Riviera Nayarit’s top sport fishing competition, returns for a seventh year in collaboration with Tepic Sport Fishing Club. Dozens of fishing teams will be pitted against each other to net the biggest Mahi Mahi, Sailfish and more.
BRING YOUR APPETITE HERE - From locally sourced (but totally chic) farm-to-table experiences served with signature cocktails to Chinese-Mexican fusion fare, the restaurants participating in this year’s Los Cabos Restaurant Week promise a delicious variety of the region’s best culinary offerings. From October 19 to 26, each will offer a special menu for $40 (approx. $800 pesos). Make your reservations now and make sure to arrive hungry.
BIG CATCH = BIG CASH - From October 22 through 26, scope out one of the highest paying sport fishing competitions in existence at Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament in Cabo San Lucas. First launched in 1981 by Bob Bisbee on the Baja Peninsula, this tournament has grown to offer bigtime cash for some lucky, hard working teams (in 2006 the Black & Blue had a purse of more than $4 million, the biggest cash payout to date). The event will draw thousands of fans to the Cabo San Lucas marina, where huge fish are weighed at the scales in front of the world-famous Puerto Paraiso Entertainment Plaza.
