Recently, developer and interior designer Saffron Case took on her dream project: a house crush of hers located on the Pacific Coast Highway that was desperately in need of some love. Now listed by The Agency’s Sandro Dazzan and Eric Haskell, 22160 Pacific Coast Highway has been transformed into a stunner, offering 60 feet of beach frontage on Carbon Beach.
Q&A with Saffron Case
How would you describe your design aesthetic?
My design choices are definitely influenced by the architecture of the home and the location, but I’ll always gravitate toward a muted color palette and clean lines to help create the vibe.
How is this home different from other projects you’ve done?
Every project has ups and downs during the design and the construction. This project had its own challenges being on the ocean. It was important to use specific materials on the exterior of the house that could tolerate the salt water and sand. The design was also very focused on allowing the view to be the main attraction.
How did this project come to be?
I’ve actually always loved this house. Driving along PCH every day and passing it, I’d notice the exterior lines of the house and how handsome it had the potential to be—it always looked like it needed some love. When it finally went on the market and I was able to go inside, I was sold. The view of the sunrise and sunset and the ocean from just about every room was seductive. The house had great bones and was ripe to be re-imagined.
What was your inspiration for the home?
I liked the idea of echoing some of the materials on the exterior of the house and using them inside the house to tell a story from start to finish. We clad the exterior in wood and plaster and continued inside by using a mixture of white oak and creamy plaster on the walls, floors and ceilings. Understanding that the ocean view would always be the main character, I tried to use as few materials as possible and keep the colors inside to a minimum.
What do you want people to feel when they are in the home?
Calm. I really wanted people to feel serene, comfortable and calm spending time in the house. All the materials are very tactile—I used sheepskin, soft linens and silks to create an environment of comfort.
What’s the most special part of this home to you?
I’m in love with the blackened copper bar. I don’t drink, so it’s a little odd that this is my favorite part of the home—but I think that’s a testament to just how alluring and beautiful it is. I love the combination of peach-colored mirrors and blackened copper. The ocean reflects in the mirror and it’s the perfect spot to serve guests.
