Guide to The Bahamas: Cat Island, A Nature-Steeped Sanctuary

by | Dec 18, 2023

Seven hundred islands make up The Bahamas, all spread out over pristine azure waters. Here, we spotlight Cat Island, a destination for kiteboarding, swimming, hiking and relaxing.

About Cat Island

Cat Island measures just 150 square miles but features an abundance of rolling hills, friendly locals, nature paths and an eight-mile pink sand beach—all undisturbed by human development. The island is ideal for kiteboarding, bone-fishing, swimming, and hiking. At an elevation of 206 feet (63 meters) above mean sea level, Mt. Alvernia on Cat Island is the highest point in the country. Locals refer to it as Como Hill. Cultural attractions about here as well; The Hermitage is a medieval stone monastery constructed in 1939 and lies atop a hill.

Cat Island Activities

On Cat Island, visitors can relax and grab a bite at a laid-back beach club or family-owned inn after a day of exploring the island’s breathtaking natural scenery. A secret surf spot on the island’s eastern side draws visitors and locals alike to chase waves and kitesurf all year.

Charter to the jaw-dropping Conception Island; infrequently visited by humans, wildlife and ecosystems on the island are what most of The Bahamas would look like without human habitation protected under the parks of The Bahamas National Trust. Guests are welcome and asked to leave nothing behind but their footprints. Say hello to green turtles, long tail tropical birds, oystercatchers and ospreys that nest on the island and surrounding cays.

Cat Island’s Arts Scene

Rake and Scrape, the indigenous music of the Bahamas comes from Cat Island. The unique, rhythmic music is made using repurposed objects like wood, saws, and goatskin drums. The Annual Rake & Scrape Festival takes place every June and celebrates the heritage of music.

The island is also home to some of the best talents in the world. Oscar-winning actor Sydney Poiter spent his boyhood on Cat Island, not too far from Arthur’s town, making history by becoming the first Black person to win an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the 1964 film “Lillies in the Field.”
