Ideas for Small Outdoor Spaces

by | May 16, 2016

An outdoor space, however small, is coveted by almost every New Yorker, but most people don’t know what to doheader with their space. Too often this area gets dismissed. We’ve seen dozens of balconies that are used as storage spaces for bikes and other items. Then we see backyards filled with weeds and plastic furniture.

Even a few square feet of outdoor space can become a quaint little oasis. The key to creating an outdoor space that is lovely and inviting is to find the right elements that effectively use the space. Here are some of our tips:

Think in Proportions

Forget oversized patio furniture. To get the most out of your space, think with scale in mind. If you enjoy hosting and want to squeeze in as much seating as possible, go with benches and folding tables instead of chairs and a big table. You’ll be able to fit more people while still having that party-like atmosphere. Or for more intimate settings, a small and simple patio set will do the trick.

Keep it Comfortable

Enjoying your outdoor space doesn’t mean uncomfortable patio furniture. Add pillows, cushions, and even an outdoor rug. Thankfully, these days, there’s a ton of ready-made upholstery options for the outdoors. Plus, they take up almost no footprint of the area.

Use Wall Space

If you’re limited to a small balcony, floor space is at a premium. Let your walls do the work. Whether it’s some outdoor lighting or growing plants, think of your outside walls as extra vertical square footage. Add some color and hang items/plants off your walls to make the most of your outdoor space!
