Inside Villa Solé: A Spectacular $55.7M Malibu Retreat

by | Oct 26, 2022

Villa Solé, a newly reimagined 1.55-acre private paradise on Malibu’s ”Celebrity Bluff Row,” was completed earlier this year by the renowned Fun-Bu Developers and is already garnering attention for its distinctive design, innovative amenities and—of course—incredible ocean views. We spoke with The Agency’s Irene Dazzan-Palmer, who holds the listing, about what sets the estate apart—from its unusual materials to her favorite features and more.

What was the design inspiration behind Villa Solé?

The inspiration is a fusion of classic European design and contemporary elements. The home’s interiors pair light plaster walls with modern minimalist furniture and spacious, open floors plans. The design was also inspired by nature and focuses on simplicity and functionality to create a home filled with harmony and continuity.

How would you describe the overall style of this home?

I’d call it Modern Minimalistic Mediterranean with flares of old-world European influence.

What are some of Villa Solé’s most inventive or innovative design features?

The home is equipped with solar panels, LED lighting throughout, smart home technology and top-of-the-line Miele appliances.

Does the home utilize any unique or particularly unusual materials?

Yes! The front entry door is custom made from Accoya wood with a shou-sugi-ban finish—this is an ancient Japanese technique for waterproofing and preserving wood that involves charring the cedar wood surface until it turns black. The home also features plaster walls and ceilings along with newly designed headboard for the primary bedroom, which is also finished in plaster. All cabinetry is rifted white oak with  built-in LED strip lighting. All the natural stone in the home has been leathered to create a lovely, unique matte finish. The kitchen and each bathroom also incorporate stone-integrated sinks designed specifically for Villa Solé by Malgosia Migdal Design (MMD). All bathroom mirrors have also been custom designed to properly fit the scale of the space. Truly, no design detail was left unnoticed—this estate delights at every turn.

What is your favorite room or place within Villa Solé?

For me, it would have to be the primary suite. It has breathtaking ocean views, a three-dimensional custom plaster headboard, floating shelves, a large linear fireplace—perfect for relaxing after taking in the sunset. I also love the expansive living room and dining rooms, which open like a great room and overlook magnificent ocean panoramas. You can literally see and hear the waves breaking on the beach below.

What is your favorite feature of this home, and why?

I have so many favorites, it’s impossible to pick just one! I love the large scale entry pivot door, which was custom made from Accoya wood with a shou-sugi-ban finish. I also love the primary bedroom headboard, which was carefully curated from start to finish with the MMD design team. Another beautiful feature is the kitchen’s stone backsplash—it starts from the top of the counters and ends at the top of the ceiling, creating an illusion of an even larger space. I also love the powder room off the kitchen, which features a stone integrated sink and stone backsplash from floor to ceiling.
