The 5 Best Cheesecakes in Manhattan

by | Apr 23, 2015

Cheesecake is practically its own food group here in New York. We love it so much that we have entire restaurants based on the creamy confection. So if you’re looking to get your fix, try these top NYC eateries.

1. Veniero’s – 342 East 11th Street, East Village

If you’ve ever been to Veniero’s you know it’s more of an occasion than a regular trip to the bakery. Open for more than 120 years, it’s safe to say that they have traditional Italian pastries down pat. They serve two types of cheesecake, a NY-style cheesecake, and a traditional Italian cheesecake. Both are fantastic but if you’re looking for that authentic ricotta cheesecake, go with the Italian style. You won’t be disappointed with the rich, yet not overly sweetened cake.

2. Eileen’s Special Cheesecake – 17 Cleveland Place, Nolita

You may just have too many choices at Eileen’s. With over 30 varieties of cheesecake, stepping into this amazing bakery might feel overwhelming. But don’t worry, no matter what flavor you choose, you’re sure to love this sweet treat. Eileen’s cakes are made with sour cream and cream cheese for a super creamy texture. The buttery graham cracker crust is absolutely to die for. If you can’t choose between the fruit topped, caramel pecan, red velvet, and all of the other amazing choices you can enjoy a sampler platter that comes with 12 of Eileen’s special varieties.

3. Junior’s Cheesecake – 1515 Broadway, Times Square

Although Junior’s is an actual restaurant where you can enjoy diner-esque fare you wouldn’t want to leave without having a slice of their namesake cheesecake. My personal favorite, Junior’s is rich and thick and sweet. It is made with a cream cheese base and the signature graham cracker crust. Be prepared, this cake is so decadent, it is like a meal in itself. You’ll have your choice of fruit topped or the unique fruit filled cakes (with or without a buttery crumb topping) as well as the more traditional marble cheesecakes. Junior’s also makes layer cakes that showcase their delicious cheesecake on top of a spongey regular cake. I highly recommend the red velvet for a truly enchanting experience.

4. Lady M’s Cake Boutique – 41 East 78th Street, Upper East Side

The most delicate of all our cheesecake options is Lady M’s Confections. Lady M serves up two choices of superb cheesecake. The first is called Gateau Nuage which literally translates to “Cloud Cake”. This lighter than air cake has a whipped cream cheese base and a sweetened sour cream icing surrounded by a cinnamon graham cracker crust. The second is a creamy vanilla flavored cheesecake. It doesn’t have a traditional crust that goes around the cake but a simple shortbread cookie bottom. Both cakes are tantalizing and quite fancy. This is not your run-of-the-mill bakery and these are certainly not ordinary cakes either. Head to Lady M’s for some edible art that will keep you talking.

5. Two Little Red Hens – 1652 Second Ave, Upper East Side

Finally, for those of us who don’t like super sweet cheesecakes, there is the Two Little Red Hens delicious and subtly tart cheesecake. The only way for me to describe this cake is to say it’s like a ricotta cheesecake and a cream cheese cheesecake had a baby. It has the slightly tart notes of unsweetened sour cream but isn’t unpleasant. It’s also light and silky at the same time. It has a perfectly browned top layer that you come to expect with a classic cheesecake and a thin layer of crumb crust on the bottom. Simply said, it’s the best of both worlds.
