Beige Is The New Black: Dressing Your Home to Sell

That bright, neon-green wall sets off your mid-century modern dining furniture beautifully; however, your potential buyers may not appreciate it quite as much as you do. Getting ready to sell your home means dressing the area down, not up, so its natural beauty shines through.

First, repaint your dark or bright walls with a neutral shade of off-white or beige and complement the new look with a similar-toned rug, throw pillows and the like. When preparing your home to sell, neutral is the new black, and that $40 can of paint could mean several thousands of dollars added to your final sales price.

In addition, give every room in your home a deep cleaning – dust curtains, wipe down the windows and remove any clutter that may be distracting to the space. It is also helpful to remove all family pictures and personal mementos – no need to share your personal business with strangers. This alone will make your house appear bigger, brighter and will allow potential buyers to imagine their own families making a new home there.

If necessary, smart sellers with over-crowded living corridors tend to rent small storage units to remove all excess furniture in order to create a sleeker, more spacious look. In addition, by removing items off kitchen counters, closets and attics, these areas too will appear more inviting, spacious and functional. Since you are already planning to move, this is the perfect opportunity to host a garage sale or donate those excess items to charity. Get a head start on your next move!

Lastly, preparing your home to sell quickly is important, but you want to spend as little money as possible – think about minor and inexpensive polishes and touch-ups to your house, such as putting new knobs on cabinets, replacing old hardware, throwing a fresh coat of neutral paint on the living room walls, making sure your windows are clean to allow the sunlight to shine through. Think simple, warm and inviting, and all the right details to attract the new owner!
